RYPOS Inc. and Utility Trailer Sales of Southern California recently provided 25 Air Resources Board (ARB) inspectors in California with a demonstration of diesel particulate filters in conjunction with a review of the new California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations for TRUs set to go into effect later this year.
ARB inspectors will be responsible for monitoring compliance with the new regulations for all reefers traveling in and through California starting with checking for compliance with the August 1, 2009 deadline for all owner/operators to register their TRU unit with the State.
The new regulation requires all refrigerated trailers and bobtail units that operate in California and that are more than seven years old, to be modified or replaced to reduce particulate matter emissions. Depending on the model year of the reefer unit, the unit manufacturer and the model year of the engine, it is possible to modify a non-compliant refrigeration unit to meet the new regulation by adding a diesel particulate filter.
“RYPOS filters provide the lowest total cost of compliance to meet the CARB Low-Emission Transport Refrigeration Unit (LETRU) In–Use Performance Standard,” commented Peter Bransfield, CEO of RYPOS, Inc.
“Now that California has raised the bar on both particulate matter emissions from diesel refrigeration units and allowable greenhouse gas emissions from tractor fuel usage while pulling 53-foot trailers, other states may soon follow suit,” said Thayne Stanger, general manager of Utility Trailer Sales of Southern California. “We are interested in helping our customers meet the regulations and the CARB to enforce them effectively, which is one of the reasons we partnered with RYPOS on this educational day.”
