May 9, 2013

Helen Hunt gives back to the planet through Global Green USA and by wearing sustainable H&M red carpet dressesEco News Network presents our favorite eco-celeb of the week. We love seeing what celebrities are up to, and that doesn’t mean when it comes to movies, television or music albums, but with how they’re giving back to the planet. This week, talented and Oscar-winning actress Helen Hunt caught our eye. In addition to her acting skills, she has quite an environmental passion. Check out how she protects Mother Earth.

Helen Hunt is quite the talented actress. From starring in “Cast Away” to “Pay It Forward” to “Mad About You,” she is definitely not shy to the entertainment industry. If that’s not enough, she was just nominated at this year’s Academy Awards as a supporting actress in “The Sessions,” and won her first Oscar for her role in “As Good As It Gets.”

She is very passionate about her day job, but that’s not the only thing Hunt loves. Did you know she goes above and beyond to protect the environment? Here are just a few ways the actress supports the planet.

1. At the 2013 Academy Awards, Hunt didn’t wear your typical red carpet dress. She chose sustainability over a famous designer. She strutted her stuff in an eco-friendly H&M dress. The simple navy blue dress (shown above) was made from eco-conscious materials. Hunt told Ryan Seacrest, “…they made a beautiful dress and they are going green.” She truly made a fashionable statement – and an important green one at that.

2. Hunt is a huge advocate of Global Green USA, an organization dedicated to supporting climate change. In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I’ve admired their [Global Green USA] work for years and met their CEO Matt Petersen a couple years ago. I love their combination of advocacy and real-world projects that improve our communities and the lives of those in need, including in New Orleans and schools in Los Angeles.”

3. Climate change is extremely important to Hunt. Regarding the rallies across the nation, Hunt hopes President Obama takes notice and takes action. “Hopefully this [the rallies] puts some wind at the back of President Obama, given his strong words both during his Inaugural address and at the State of the Union about the need for urgent action on climate change. We all need to raise our voice in support of action on climate change and solutions like increased use of solar power, more energy efficient buildings and higher mileage cars.”
