Top Five Celebrity Environmentalists

Aside from scandals and sex tapes, celebrities are well known for their philanthropic efforts along with donating their time and resources to a multitude of non-profit organizations around the globe. But who’s leading the way when it comes to protecting our environment? Below are our top five picks for those celebrities at the forefront of the green movement.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio
Oscar nominee Leonardo Dicaprio not only shows his passion for acting, but also for the environment. Dicaprio promotes environmental awareness through the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. The foundation works with and supports organizations such as Global Green USA and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Recently, Dicaprio joined forces with the World Wildlife Fund to help with the Save Tigers Now campaign. Dicaprio also produced and narrated the documentary, “The 11th Hour,” about the state of the environment.

2. Ed Begley, Jr.
Actor and environmentalist, Ed Begley, Jr., is well known around Hollywood as a top celebrity activist. He serves on the board of directors for the Environmental Media Association and is a supporter of Friends of the Earth. Begley even uses “pedal power,” where he bikes for 10 minutes to power up his toaster. In 2007, Begley’s own miniseries debuted on HGTV called, “Living with Ed,” where he and his wife showed how they lived green.

3. Ellen Degeneres
Comedian, talk show host and “American Idol” judge, Ellen Degeneres makes protecting the environment a big part of her life. Degeneres is a huge animal and environment lover, which she demonstrates through her support for organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Degeneres also turned vegan after educating herself about factory farming and cruelty to animals. She even provides educational eco-friendly information on her Ellen’s Life page.

4. Alicia Silverstone
Like many, Alicia Silverstone decided to become vegan after seeing a documentary about the slaughtering of animals. Silverstone lives a healthy lifestyle and takes care of the environment. Silverstone uses her site, The Kind Life, to post eco-friendly recipes, health news, and style and household tips. Her site is also used as a support system for those on an eco-friendly journey.

5. Rachel McAdams
Most known for her role in “The Notebook,” Rachel McAdams has made a huge impact in the acting world and for the planet. With three friends, she created the Green Is Sexy site where they post eco-friendly information hoping to make an impact on the environment. McAdams helps the environment by riding her bike, supporting tree organizations and using green power in her home.
