Top Sustainable Winter Destinations

Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 6.53.09 PMLooking for a great green getaway? There are some great locations across the country that offer fun, relaxation, and are eco-friendly to boot! Here are a few of our favorite must see destinations for this winter.

Cold as Ice
Nestled in a little village just 200 km north of the Arctic Circle is the ICEHOTEL. A truly unique resort, this hotel is almost entirely made of ice. Guests can enjoy rooms complete with ice beds, chandeliers, and much more.

There is even an ICEBAR that serves cool drinks in glasses made of ice. The hotel draws visitors from all over the world looking for a one-of-a-kind Swedish winter experience.  The ice used for the hotel is taken from the nearby Torne River and replenished with fresh water in the summer when the hotel melts. Today the hotel buys renewable energy (Källmärkt) and hopes to be completely CO2negative by the year 2015.

Hug a Tree
For those looking for peaceful walking and hiking trips, the Redwood National and State Park in northern California is a great place to get out and enjoy the season. Home to some of the largest and most majestic trees in the world, this park provides an excellent opportunity to experience the true beauty and power of nature. When visiting the 131,983 acres, be sure to also check out the famous Wawona Tree. This giant sequoia is actually wide enough to drive a car through!

Skiing Green
One of the most scenic eco-friendly spots is Hotel Terra Jackson Hole in Wyoming. This super green resort is LEED certified and is also a top rated location for skiing and snowboarding. Some of its eco-friendly practices and amenities include:

  • Hotel interiors that capture natural light (more than 90 percent)
  • Low voc paints, carpets, and sealants that cover the entire hotel
  • Radiant heating flooring that runs through the parking garage
  • 100 percent organic spa products used throughout the hotel
