LAUFEN’s Ceramic Innovation Wins 2013 GREEN GOOD DESIGN Award

CHICAGO – LAUFEN, the Swiss innovator of the bathroom as a living space is proud to announce that they have received their third GREEN GOOD DESIGN Award, this one for their new ceramic called SaphirKeramik. Presented by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the GREEN GOOD DESIGN Awards are an extension of the GOOD DESIGN™ Awards. The GOOD DESIGN™ Awards were founded in Chicago in 1950 by renowned architects, holding much clout in searching for the most innovative in product design and graphic design. The GREEN GOOD DESIGN Awards follow suit by focusing on practices, products and architecture that are environmentally sound yet also cutting-edge.

“At LAUFEN, we never stop thinking about improving our designs, through innovating the manufacturing process and technology we use to create our products,” said Ilker Hussein, global projects manager for LAUFEN Bathrooms. “Our Research Director Dr. Werner Fischer developed SaphirKeramik together with his team and various university research institutes and they worked on the ‘recipe’ for almost a decade. They were determined to improve not only the design capabilities but equally important was to be able to reduce the raw materials used, which then lower energy consumption in firing, production and transport. This marks the beginning of a new trend in revolutionizing the design language of ceramics using the SaphirKeramik as we have for the Kartell by Laufen collection to create washbasin products that are totally unique to the marketplace. We are honored that this prestigious group of judges recognized LAUFEN’s efforts.”

The GREEN GOOD DESIGN Awards category for Innovative Green Products honors companies that promote greater sustainability practices by saving energy and using recycled material that are used in households or for business applications.
