October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Eco News Network encourages all of our readers to consider adopting if you are planning to add a canine companion to your family. And, during October and every month, please do what you can to support your local shelter, rescue group, and the ASPCA and all of the wonderful pets looking for forever homes.
What can you do?
- Volunteer at the shelter or rescue group
- Make a monetary donation or check with the shelter to see what they need and purchase something to donate
- Sign up as a foster parent
- Spread the word about Adopt a Shelter Pet Month
Petfinder offers more ideas on how to help here.
How do I find my local shelter?
The ASPCA and Petfinder both offer lists of shelters to make it easy to find one in your area. Or, contact a local veterinary office and they will be able to steer you in the right direction.
Even if you like a particular kind of dog, there are rescue groups that focus on almost any breed so you can still adopt.
How do I know if I should bring a canine companion into my life?
Before you make the move to bring that new family member into your daily life take the time to go through this handy checklist of dog adoption questions from Petfinder. A dog is a living breathing lifetime commitment. They come in all shapes, sizes, and ages but they all need daily care, medical care, love, and your time.
Email your story about the wonderful shelter dog you made a forever friend and a photo to email@example.com and you’ll be entered in a drawing for one of three naturally nautical rope dog toys donated by Captain Dave at Island Time Pets. For every story we recieve, Eco News Network will donate $1 to MSPCA-Angell shelter and adoption center in Boston. Tune in to the Eco News Network Facebook page for these stories throughout the month.
