Today is America Recycles Day, a day for everyone to take the pledge to recycle, encourage others to recycle, and buy products made from recyclable materials. It is a time not only to reflect on the environment and what recycling does for our planet, but to take action and motivate others to do the same.
America Recycles Day is an initiative run through Keep America Beautiful, the largest non-profit community cleanup/development organization in the United States. It was founded in 1953 and since then, its efforts have been focused around community cleanup & greening, recycling, and litter prevention.
The America Recycles Day website offers the public the chance to take the pledge to recycle. By pledging, you promise to learn about materials collected for recycling in your area, act by reducing your personal waste, and share the message by encouraging others to do the same.
There are many recycling events being held today, you can find out about the event being held closest to you here.
According to Keep America Beautiful, in 2009 we filled US landfills with trash equivalent to the weight of 88 million cars. Also in 2009, Americans produced enough trash to circle the earth 24 times! That is a lot of waste!
Recycling is vital to the health of our planet. By recycling, we contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, conservation of wildlife habitats, and the amount of trash that ends up in landfills. Today, be sure to take the pledge to recycle and encourage others to do the same so we can help save our planet!
